Position Summary

As a Clinical Pharmacist, Medical Oncology Pharmacy, you will play a critical role in supporting oncology-focused medical pharmacy initiatives while serving as a key clinical partner to Aetna Medical Directors. This role blends deep clinical oncology expertise with strategic medical pharmacy work, helping ensure evidence-based, guideline-concordant oncology coverage decisions while advancing affordability, value, and innovation across medical pharmacy programs.

Reporting to the Lead Director of Medical Pharmacy Strategy and Product, you will have a primary responsibility for supporting oncology appeal reviews and a secondary responsibility for contributing to broader medical pharmacy strategy initiatives, including site of care optimization, oncology drug list strategy, and utilization management (UM) program development. This is a 100% remote role ideal for a seasoned oncology pharmacist with strong clinical judgment, literature evaluation skills, and interest in payer-based strategy work.

Primary Responsibilities – Oncology Clinical Review

  • Partner closely with Aetna Medical Directors to support the clinical review of oncology-related appeals and complex coverage determinations.
  • Evaluate oncology therapies using published clinical literature, NCCN Guidelines, Aetna preferred drug lists, and medical necessity criteria.
  • Provide clear, evidence-based clinical summaries and recommendations to support consistent, high-quality oncology decision-making.
  • Stay current on emerging oncology therapies, indications, and guideline updates to inform appeal reviews and policy discussions.

Secondary Responsibilities – Medical Pharmacy Strategy & Programs

  • Support the execution of oncology-focused medical pharmacy initiatives, including site of care strategies and oncology benefit design considerations.
  • Assist in the development and refinement of medical drug lists and oncology utilization management strategies.
  • Contribute to the implementation of medical pharmacy programs that improve affordability, quality, and member outcomes in oncology.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners (medical, clinical policy, analytics, operations) to ensure alignment of oncology strategies.
  • Leverage clinical expertise and available data insights to identify opportunities for improvement and innovation.
  • Support the development of business cases, clinical rationales, and strategic recommendations related to oncology programs.

Required Qualifications

  • PharmD from an accredited school of pharmacy.
  • Completion of relevant PGY1 residency training, with PGY2 in Oncology strongly preferred
  • Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist (BCOP) required.
  • Minimum of 4 years of clinical oncology practice experience, ideally in an academic medical center, community oncology, or integrated health system.
  • Deep knowledge of oncology pharmacotherapy, NCCN Guidelines, and evidence-based medicine principles.
  • Strong ability to critically evaluate clinical literature and translate findings into clear, concise clinical recommendations.
  • Experience collaborating with physicians and other clinicians in high-stakes clinical decision-making environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with payer-based medical pharmacy programs, prior authorization, or appeals processes.
  • Understanding of medical benefit oncology management, including site of care, buy-and-bill dynamics, and benefit design considerations.
  • Exposure to utilization management, medical policy development, or population health oncology programs.
  • Comfort working cross-functionally in a matrixed, strategic environment.
